53 Released Players Worth Tracking

With the first wave of roster cuts over, nearly 500 players have been made available for teams to either sign outright or claim on waivers. Not all of those players are worth paying attention to, but nearly a roster's worth deserve some second looks.

While there's a good chance the Vikings may only be interested in one or two of the names, if any at all, the Vikings have also shown they aren't shy to potentially add a good practice squad stash late in the process—Justin Jackson from the Detroit Lions being a good example.

Aside from that there's some veteran talent worth exploring. Some big names, like Will Hill, didn't make the list because of a poor recent history of performance, but most have if only to provide some discussion.

Some positions are listed despite there being no need, but they'll be useful if only because injury or trade may affect depth. If the Vikings are able to net a late-round pick for Christian Ponder, for example, they may want to consider grabbing a developmental quarterback like Bryn Renner or a veteran backup like Caleb Hanie—neither of whom are likely more talented than Ponder but may provide good QB3 services.

Similarly, some positions of need, like guard, don't have many or any listings because the depth in the NFL is poor. Make of it what you will.

One further note, if this were not a Vikings-specific list with Mike Zimmer in mind, Erik Lora would likely be on the list and the position listings would be different (edge rushers were labeled DE regardless of what they were in college or previous team, while 3-4 DEs are listed as DTs).

Of these, Ryan Spadola, Cody Hoffman, Bryn Renner, Kevin Reddick, Jackson Jeffcoat, Adrian Hamilton, Terrell Thomas, Qua Cox, Jemea Thomas and Brandon Ghee interest me the most.

Of all of them, Brandon Ghee is the most likely, given his history with Zimmer. What do you think? Any names that pop out at you? Any names I missed?

Looks like some usefull CBs.  You're right Ghee is an obvious candidate.  I always liked Ras-I Dowling also.  He's a pretty good athlete with upside, that seems to be the kind of guys Zimmer likes; well at least we know he likes them as LB's/edge rushers.

IF Christian Ponder where to get traded Mike Scott would be a good developmental QB to look at. Also MBT was released by the 49ers and was always a favorite of mine. If our receiver depth wasn't as good as it's looked in camp, Stephen Hill might be worth a flyer. Seeing as Rod Smith and Adam Thielen have looked good, I'd pass.

Am I the only one stunned by this kind of coverage? Arif just broke down 53 players cut from NFL teams over the weekend and listed their strengths and weaknesses. Granted, the Vikings signing several of these guys is unlikely, but very cool to read about. Thanks, Arif!

Yeah, Arif deserves a nod for this piece... Tons of research behind it. Great read.

I remembered the name Ryan Spadola from somewhere, and then I remembered he was suspended from a playoff game in college for sending a racist tweet directed at someone from an opposing team. Maybe he's figured things out, but I can't see how you go out of your way to call someone very high character after that incident.

Oof. Obviously, I wasn't aware of this.  That tidbit came from a conversation with an area scout who probably knew about this and didn't think it mattered. You and I both disagree about that. I'll change the table to reflect that.

An interesting note, that tweet was him quoting a phrase back at someone verbatim in a reply, but he made them his (as Lehigh said) and his judgment at least was poor.

No, you're not alone.

There are certainly guys here that would be worth a look, but the team already struggled to get to 75. Right now you need a significant contender for a roster spot, otherwise you are just watering down the practice quality. A lot of these guys were cut by teams who have needs at the position the guy plays.

That was a ton of great information, and I want to throw out some support for Marvin McNutt. He's my all-time favorite college football player, and I hope he's able to catch on with some team. He was a big time playmaker at Iowa, catching all those passes from Mr. USA, Ricky Stanzi.

Dang, that's a big list. You must have put some time into this!
If the Vikings cut Ponder, I'd instantly sign QB Thad Lewis. He actually played OK for the Bills last year as he started 7 games. (I think it was 7...) He'd be a great 3rd string veteran behind Teddy.

But if we wanted to go down the developmental route, I'd take Matt Scott.

At CB, I think Terrell Thomas would have been a decent guy to look at instead of Derek Cox.

Some other guys who are alright could be WR Joe Adams, CB Mike Harris, and DT George Uko.
