Minnesota Vikings "Hometown Roster"

Earlier this year, somebody awesome over at EliteDaily.com had an amazing idea. What would happen if we took the idea behind Lebron’s return to the Cleveland and pulled together fictitious Hometown Teams for each NBA franchise? The teams would be solely made up of players in the league that originally hail from that specific state or region. A great idea in theory, but unfortunately the Minnesota Timberwolves hometown starting five of Nate Wolters, Alan Anderson, Mike Miller, Mike Muscala and Kris Humphries was a bit underwhelming looking at the rest of the competition.

Well, now another awesome person from BestTickets.com has compiled hometown rosters for each of the teams in the NFL! Were the Vikings able to field a more competitive hometown team than the Timberwolves did?

The short answer is yes, but don’t get your hopes too high.

While traditional powerhouse regions including Texas, California and Florida put together some of the most dominant squads, the Minnesota roster wasn’t half bad.
Pulling from a geographic area spanning the entirety of Minnesota, part of Wisconsin, a portion of Iowa, just over half of South Dakota and almost all of North Dakota, the Vikings actually pulled together a pretty impressive grouping of active NFL players that were born in the surrounding area.

Here’s a quick look at the Minnesota Hometown Roster…

OFFENSE:
QB – Kyle Orton (Altoona, IA)
RB – Darren Sproles (Waterloo, IA)
WR – Larry Fitzgerald (Minneapolis, MN)
WR – Eric Decker (Cold Spring, MN)
TE – Joel Dreessen (Ida Grove, IA)
OL – Riley Reiff (Parkston, SD)
OL – Ryan Harris (Minneapolis, MN)

Breaking it down a little, there are certainly some bright spots on Minnesota's offense and then some areas of weakness. The obvious bright spot stemming from the wide receiver position where one of the best wide receivers in the league Larry Fitzgerald (Arizona Cardinals) is flanked by one of the fastest up and comers in Eric Decker (New York Jets). That duo of receivers had 2,242 yards receiving and 21 touchdowns a year ago!

Sproles (Philadelphia Eagles) adds in a bigger name running back but his production has not lived up to his reputation the past few seasons. A dual threat back, Darren’s better days are likely behind him.

And speaking of over the hill, the quarterback position for our Minnesota squad is held down by Kyle Orton who is currently a free agent, still looking for a place to land during the preseason. Gone are the days where Orton threw for nearly 4,000 yards and 20+ TDs. That said, with this receiving corps, just chuck the ball up there and let them get after it.

Rounding out the offense are tight end Joel Dreessen (free agent) who solely based on his status should probably be replaced by former Viking John Carlson (Litchfield, MN – Arizona Cardinals). Then across the line Riley Reiff (Detroit Lions) and Ryan Harris (Kansas City Chiefs) make up a serviceable, but not impressive offensive front.

DEFENSE:
CB – Marcus Sherels (Rochester, MN)
CB – Coty Sensabaugh (Kingsport, TN – not from target area)
LB – Chad Greewnay (Mount Vernon, SD)
LB – Terrell Suggs (Minneapolis, MN)
S – Craig Dahl (Mankato, MN)
DL – Cameron Jordan (Minneapolis, MN)
DL – Karl Klug (La Crosse, WI)

Led by Chad Greenway (Minnesota Vikings) and Terrell Suggs (Baltimore Ravens) in the middle, the Minnesota defense is a smattering of recognizable names but is lacking any dynamic playmakers to turn heads.

Coty Sensabaugh (Tennessee Titans), Marcus Sherels (Minnesota Vikings), Craig Dahl (San Francisco 49ers) will handle the duties in the defensive backfield while Cameron Jordan (New Orleans Saints) and Karl Klug (Tennessee Titans) work in the trenches on the defensive line. Overall, it’s a pretty mediocre hometown defensive unit.

Where Did Other Current Vikings Land?
  • WR Greg Jennings falls in on the Chicago squad.
  • TE Kyle Rudolph was selected for the Cincinnati team.
  • CB Captain Munnerlyn lines up with Peyton Manning for the New Orleans Squad.
  • DE Everson Griffen will represent the Arizona team.
  • T Matt Kalil anchors one of the most dominant teams in San Diego.
  • RB Adrian Peterson flanks the QB (Sam Bradford) for the Dallas squad.
  • T Phil Loadholt will man the offensive line as part of the SF/OAK roster.
  • S Jamarca Sanford lines up in the defensive backfield for the team from Tennessee.
How do you think the Minnesota Hometown NFL Team would fare against the others? Were there any other MN Natives that were left off this list?

Have to love the Wide Receivers!! That's kind of fun. I had no idea that Terrell Suggs was from Minneapolis though. I enjoyed this look!

I guess I should clarify, these are players that were BORN in Minnesota and the surrounding area. Some may have grown up elsewhere.

By my math, here are two others that could be considered...

 - LB James Laurinaitis (Wayzata, MN)

 - TE Matt Spaeth (St. Michael, MN)

Mostly depth here, but just wanted to note...

OL Billy Turner, Soreview, MN (drafted by Miami this year)

OL Seantrel Henderson, St. Paul, MN (drafted by Buffalo this year)

DB Marcus Williams, Minneapolis, MN (undrafted by Houston, likely to make roster)

WR Weston Dressler, Bismarck, ND (signed by KC this year, all star in the CFL)

WR Adam Thielen, Detroit Lakes, MN (should make the Vikings team)

LB Tyler Starr, Little Rock, IA (drafted by ATL this year)

It would be even better but the Packers couldn't fit their WR criteria and Michael Floyd was shipped to Green Bay.
