Official Vikings-Chiefs Game Thread

It’s dress rehearsal time. The Minnesota Vikings face the Chiefs in sweltering Kansas City on Saturday night at 7 p.m. CT. We’ll have some of our Vikings Journal writers talking about the game right here in the air-conditioned comments section so register and join in on the discussion.
Game time temperatures in Kansas City are supposed to be in the mid-to-upper 90s. In fact, the Chiefs have advised fans attending the game to take precautions.

Here’s what’s hot at Vikings Journal (see what we did there?):

Joe Oberle has a preview of Vikings vs. Chiefs as quarterback Matt Cassel returns to face his former team and examines the ongoing battle for the starting strong safety job.

Aj Mansour discusses the possible concerns over Vikings kicker Blair Walsh, who has missed two field goals and an extra point through two preseason games.

Also, the Vikings announced Friday that the Wilf family is contributing an additional $46.1 million to the new stadium construction, pushing the budget to $1.024 billion.

Lastly, if you have a fantasy football draft this weekend, be sure to download Bo Mitchell’s free cheat sheet or post a question in our fantasy football forum. Good luck in your draft!

Let’s hope no players or coaches melt in the heat and that nobody gets injured tonight – that’s the No. 1 objective at this point of the preseason.

If Blair Walsh misses a FG or PAT tonight is it time for widespread panic in Vikings Nation?

Will coach Zimmer announce Matt Cassel as his Week 1 starting quarterback after the game tonight when he meets with the media?

Chris Crocker is starting at strong safety for the Vikings against the Chiefs. This is a critical game for those competing at the strong safety position.

Vikings win the toss and elect to defer. Blair Walsh kicks off to begin the game and puts it out of the back of the end zone.

Let's go! Excited to see...

 - this secondary battle play out tonight!

 - Cordarrelle return kickoffs

 - Cassel continue to flow

Will coach Zimmer announce Matt Cassel as his Week 1 starting quarterback after the game tonight when he meets with the media?

If he doesn't he's doing it wrong, if he does I win a free pizza (even if it's only in my imagination)!

Sure was good to see Xavier Rhodes all over Chiefs receiver on third down to stop KC short of first! I said some pretty rough things about his performance last week.

Flash! Cordarrelle Patterson on a 53-yard touchdown reception from Matt Cassel. Wow!

THAT was a nice looking play.

TOUCHDOWN! Matt Cassel hits Cordarrelle Patterson for a 53-yard bomb!

 - Great blocking by offensive line.

 - Great concentration by Patterson

 - Great to see Cassel following up his previous good performances

You guys, dare I say this team could be kind of fun to watch this season?

Aug 23 2014 06:21 PM

About twice a game, Cassel needs to just forget everything he knows about football and chuck it deep to Patterson.

Matt Kalil beat on that sack of Cassel.

Look... an interception! That's precisely what the Vikings need to do more of this season on defense. Good sign.

Right tackle Phil Loadholt has a lower leg injury and has been taken to the locker room for X-rays. Not good.

Safety Jamarca Sanford left the game with a quad injury and his return is questionable.

Job one tonight was stay healthy. That's not happening so far.

Wentworth beat pretty bad while filling in for Loadholt.  Deanthony Thomas looks like a nice pick by the chiefs.

Yeah, that was pretty ugly by Wentworth.

End of the first.  Main thought is I still do not like how teams have moved the ball against our first team defense this preseason.

Good sign? Loadholt back on the bench.

TWO interceptions already for the Vikings tonight?!? What team are we watching again?

Chad Greenway with the Vikings' third interception of the preseason. Second in the red zone in just over a quarter.

Vikings desperately need to improve their plus minus this season.  That will help.

I like the way Cassel has looked tonight and all preseason.  Very decisive in his decisions.  Looks a lot more sure of the offense.

These interceptions are a good sign for the Mike Zimmer defense.

This is the first time all preseason that I've seen regular pressure off the ends of the defensive line. They've yet to capitalize with a sack but that pressure has led to interceptions and poor decisions by Smith.

Aaron Rodgers will not throw two picks in the red zone.  Vikings need to limit these big plays.
