The NFL announced Friday that they have upheld the three-game suspension of Vikings wide receiver Jerome Simpson. The Vikings released the following statement from an NFL spokesperson:

“Jerome Simpson of the Minnesota Vikings has been suspended without pay for the first three games of the 2014 regular season for violating the NFL Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse.

Simpson will be eligible to return to the Vikings’ active roster on Monday, September 22 following the team’s September 21 game against the New Orleans Saints.”

The three-game suspension stems from Simpson’s drunken-driving arrest last Nov. 9 in Minneapolis. He eventually pleaded guilty to careless driving and refusal to submit to a chemical test.

His attorneys appealed the three-game NFL suspension at a recent hearing, arguing that he shouldn’t be regarded as a repeat offender of the league’s substance abuse program because this was his first alcohol-related offense.

Their arguments evidently didn’t work.

Simpson was previously suspended the first three games of the 2012 season after mailing marijuana to his house – he served 15 days and jail and put on three years’ probation for that arrest.

The Vikings must trim their roster to 53 players tomorrow. The suspension creates room for one more wide receiver to potentially make the cut.
