I really dislike the Mount Rushmore-themed lists that are so pervasive in sports and entertainment these days. It's overdone and over-simplistic. Having said that, I'll stoop to that level for the sake of a good Vikings discussion. I can think of no better place to contribute to the cliched Mount Rushmore lists than right here in the Vikings Journal forums.

So what say you, Vikings fans? Who belongs on the Minnesota Vikings Mount Rushmore? (Hint: any answer that does not include Bud Grant is wrong).

I'll start: Bud Grant, Fran Tarkenton, Randy Moss, Adrian Peterson

Can't believe I left off: Alan Page

1. Bud Grant

2. John Randle

3. Cris Carter

4. Fran Tarkenton (holding baby caricatures of Adrian Peterson, Randy Moss, Chris Doleman and Alan Page, is that too many??) :)

I don't remember Mount Rushmore having that many faces. ;)

I must admit, I didn't think anyone would have Gary Anderson on their list.

IMHO, it's tough because there are three that I think separate themselves from the rest and you can go just about any direction you want with the fourth. The three are Grant, Tarkenton and Page. Beyond that I'd say Moss or AP, and give it to AP for now. But I also kind of like leaving a spot open for whoever leads this team to a Super Bowl win.

So, in this fictitious talker, let's pretend that the unfinished "Crazy Horse" sculpture is being built to represent the ONE that stands above all of the rest...does that have to go to Bud?

The most exciting Vikings player of all time, Randy Moss, has to be one of the four IMO. I would also include Bud Grant, Fran Tarkenton, and Adrian Peterson.

I'd put Favre on there just to troll the Packers fans :P

As for a legit 4-some:

1) Coach Grant
2) Fran the man
3) #84
4) All-Day

So many, many more could be easily argued though, and it wouldn't take much to change my mind.

I honestly don't know how anyone can put Peterson or Moss over Alan Page.  Alan Page was one of only two defensive players to ever win the MVP award.  He completely redefined the way NFL teams saw the position.  He'd rank in the top 5 all-time in sacks if it was a stat when he played.  The honors would take me another two to three paragraphs to ist.

Argue over Moss and Peterson for that fourth spot, but Page is a shoe-in.

I like this! Bud can be the over-looker. I'd go Page, Moss, AP... and I guess you could put Fran Tarkenton, but he's pretty annoying, so I'd rather it go to Cris Carte... wait, same issue... how about Carl Eller?

I don't know if it's really "trolling" when the guy won a Superbowl in Green Bay...

Exactly why it would be if we put him on a Vikings Mt. Rushmore. I'm sure it'd get one or two GB fans up in arms at the very least.

A more effective way of inciting Green Bay fans is to start a rumor that Wisconsin is adopting Minnesota Sunday sale laws.

Ha! Actually that might start a riot and there seems to be enough of that lately.

The thing I hate about Rushmore sites in sports, especially football in this case, is you could make a very serious discussion over an offensive monument as well as a defensive one.

Grant no doubt!
Tarkenton no doubt!
And I'd have to include Page as well.

The fourth spot is really rough!

Can we put Moss over Carter?

Should AP, no matter his tremendous career thus far, be placed on this monument while still playing? Should there be a moratorium of sorts against active players?

Regardless, there simply may not be room for Eller and Marshall.

Now, if this were a HOF discussion instead, I'd be biting my tongue and fingers about how long it took Krause to make it, as well as the continuing omissions of Marshall and Tingelhoff.

Grrrrrrr!

I wish Mount Rushmore had been created with more heads.

The artists really missed the boat on not foretelling that their work would be utilized as a template, decades later, for important discussions like this! :D

Didn't foresee anyone including Max Winter on their Mount Rushmore. I thought naming their headquarters after him might be tribute enough.

I see what you did there. Perhaps this should be a different thread. Not sure what we'd call this monument, though.
