It seems like Krause was always playing center field. That's how he got all those interceptions. I think he would have left the hard-hitting to Harrison Smith... then and now.

While I only saw the latter half of his career, that's my impression of Krause as well.  He was a technically sound tackler but not really a hitter, and he lived for those deep balls that had any float to them.


In a way he was ahead of his time, since he was coverage-oriented even for a free safety, but playing in an era dominated by the run.  Hard to imagine what he could have done in today's game, with passing attempted half again as often now as when he played, if not more.


And at 6'3", 200 lbs., he's one of the relatively few players of his era who not only wouldn't be undersized today, but would still stand out as having prototypical size for his position.
